3 Interior Design Secrets

Today I want to let you in on a few interior design secrets to create that “WOW” factor in your home. These are all super easy tricks that anyone can do that will create more interest and depth in your space.

#1. It doesn’t have to match perfectly

“But Nicole, it doesn’t match…” I hear this all the time during the beginning phases of my projects, and I can’t help but smile every time. It doesn’t have to match! Just trust me on this one. Instead of matching, focus your energy on finding pieces, patterns and colors that compliment each other.

A foolproof way to do this is to find a repeated element that can be carried from one piece to another. Take these pillows for example. While they don’t match, they all share one common element, the color orange. You know what else? Because they don’t match they share the element of delight, too. This added diversity helps create a more visually appealing space…just from pillows!

#2. Rug size matters

“But large rugs are expensive, Nicole!” While this is true, size does matter…when it comes to rugs, anyway. If you’re wondering how small is too small, if at least one leg from each piece of furniture in the room doesn’t sit on it, it’s too small. I can hear wallets everywhere groaning in disappointment. Don’t worry!  I wouldn’t be a good designer if I didn’t have some frugal tips up my sleeve to achieve your desired look for less.

To save a little cash, try layering your more expensive, but too-small rug, on top of a larger natural grass rug. For a calm esthetic, arrange your layered rugs parallel to the walls in your space.

If you’re looking to spice it up a little, try incorporating some unconventional shapes (like animal hides) and layering, making sure the top rug covers at least half of the one under it. Just like that, your floors are on fleek!

#3. Paint adds drama

“But Nicole, white walls are in vogue!”  Yes, yes, I know they are! Even my home has primarily white walls which makes showcasing my art a breeze, BUT white walls are not the only way to make an impact. Don’t be afraid of color. After all, it’s just paint, and it can be a really great way to bring a room together.

If you’re feeling stuck as to which color to choose, try picking a color 3-4 shades lighter or darker than your accent color. Just remember, darker shades will absorb more light, so consider the room’s light sources and purpose before whipping out that midnight blue. Accent walls are also a great gateway-drug into the world of wall color, for those feeling a little-color shy.

That’s it for today, you guys. Try out these tips on your next project and let me know how it goes. Happy decorating!
